Acklins

Acklins is one of a group of Island lying on the Southeastern part of the chain, which  is a shallow lagoon called the Bight of Acklins. Its Capital is Spring Point and it is 120 square Miles. It is  hilly or highly elevated, and was originally inhabitated by Lucayans Indians.During  1780’s the American Loyalist brought thousands of slaves to cultivate cotton on their plantation. After the abolition of slavery the natives main income was sponging, fishing, salt and cascrilla bark which is used to flavor compare a liquor. It should be noted however that the exports of salt and sponging have fallen by the wayside, and no longer exist.
